Burial - Rival Dealer EP
Get a first listen of Burial's new EP Rival Dealer, out today in digital format from Hyperdub, and on CD and vinyl on December 16th. Burial continues to release material in short bursts, having not released a full-length LP since 2007's Untrue.
The EP's title track comes right out of the gate in energetic fashion with an uncharacteristic Chemical Brothers style Big Beat. The signature distant vocal snippets, reverb-drenched everything, and layers of grime are there, but the rhythmic feel is unfamiliar territory. Burial seemingly plays up this dichotomy midway through the track, as the song shifts gears to his more typical style of two-step, accompanied by a sample stating "this is who I am." The EP's other two tracks also find Burial in somewhat unexplored (for him) rhythmic vibes: "Hiders" is a straighforward-as-it-gets, 80s-ish sounding New Wave throwback, while "Come Down to Us" is a minimal hip-hop head-nodder. No matter the setting, however, Burial never ceases sounding exactly like Burial.
